Topic: Training with Power

Presenter: Brandon Brown

Did you ever wonder how to gauge how hard your workouts are, and if you are working out with the correct intensity in your training plan? In the past the very subjective scale of "perceieved exertion" was used for you to to scale and track the intensity of your workouts. Not long ago, heart rate zone training became a popular way to determine the amount of work you were doing at each training session, but this has been notoriously inaccurate as so many factors have an affect on your heart rate. Enter power. The most accurate way to determine the intensities of your workout plan are through the use of power, at the actual point of where it is generated, the hub. This torque measurement, over time, yields a precise power reading for you to track your intensity, as well as long term, how much your cycling is improving. This month's meeting will discuss the various techniques for determining power, along with a demonstration of the latest technology, CycleOp's PowerTap. Join us for a techie discussion of these training techniques, and if you have a Shimano 9 speed transmission, test your own power, if time permits.
